You got this movie and I’m gettin’ hitched. Looks like we both had a good month.
Most of the way through American Splendor and I’m really enjoying it. My favorite part is the interviews with the real creator of the original comic, Harvey Pekar. He’s this off-the-wall, gloomy guy who laughs and basks in his gloom. It reminds me of my dad…a lot. I’m pretty sure that this is almost exactly how he was over the last couple decades. I’d like to travel in time and be with him in his favorite times to see how he was and what he was like. I’ll leave it at that, as I don’t want this to get too personal about other members of the family. But, watch the movie. It’s good. It’s happily pessimistic and wonderful.
I love piggyback rides.

So far, I’m fairly disappointed in the commercials for the Super Bowl this year. It seems like Bud Light is the only actual sponsor besides Fox plugging their own stuff–which seems like a dumb idea because most people know Fox’s lineup. I’m expecting some better commercials as the game progresses, or it’s just gonna be a huge disappointment. Beer is cool, but I’m kind of expecting something more–maybe some women in corsets, other beer companies, some cool car commercials… I dunno, something great. Now there’s a plug for the commercials on Myspace. Who cares if all of the commercials suck?
In the quest to rule the world of Little Debbie snacks, two competitors have trounced many other competitors–Zebra Cakes, Honey Buns, even Cosmic Brownies have fallen at the feet of two spectacular treats.
Oatmeal Cream Pies and Nutty Bars are both delicious choices in the snack world, but it’s time to pick one as the all-time best. And, with it’s versatility, value, and overall ability to be consumed by the boxfull–Oatmeal Cream Pies!
Nutty Bars are ok, but they weigh in at $1.39 and you only get 12 oz. of tasty versus the 16.2 oz. of flavor for $1.19. Further, you can’t smash a Nutty Bar into a bigger sandwich.
On the flip side, you can disassemble a Nutty Bar into its many layers of sweet goodness, enjoying each layer of crispy wafer or peanut butter or chocolate as you go.
So, it’s a close race, but the Oatmeal Cream Pies will always have a soft (cream-filled) spot in my heart.

Last Christmas, the madre got me a pretty sweet gift of a Rayovac wall charger that comes bundled with rechargeable batteries. I was really happy to get this, but I hadn’t used it until about a month ago because I hadn’t gotten through all of the batteries yet. Well, I threw some of them in the charger and didn’t really pay close attention to them. When I went back to them the next day, the batteries had corroded and even crusted over part of the charger/maybe melted it a little bit.
Maybe this was just my charger, or maybe there was something wrong with the batteries I had (though, they were official Rayovac Rechargeables). *shrugs* Wonder if that’s a common occurrence.
A week or so ago, I was browsing craigslist and saw a ‘curb alert’ for a desk down by Ali’s house. I recommended that she just take a look for me, but she was pretty insistent that if I wanted it, I should probably check it out. So, we hopped in the Fit, drove a couple blocks to where it should be and found a behemoth of a desk.
It’s a big, sturdy, nice desk but it’s quite heavy which made it quite the task to squeeze into the mini-minivan. But, we ended up getting it inside, Aaron and I lugged it upstairs and now it resides next to my old desk, giving me a lot of workspace. Finally. As you can see here, I’ve got the dual monitors set up (though I need to get a DVI to VGA converter to make use of the whole scene). But, I’m pleased and thankful to craigslist for a schweet free desk that I would have paid a decent amount for.
I’ve got a weight set that I think I’m going to put up on craigslist soon. It’s just sort of taking up space and there’s a gym in the backyard that I can get a membership for that would be more advantageous, I think, because of the variety of exercise equipment.
When I was in Ashland for Thanksgiving, I spent some time in the garage with Dave and some of his high school friends. A small group of them were discussing animals and somehow got on the topic of Cesar Milan (sp?), also known as The Dog Whisperer. It was nice to hear that some other people enjoy the show. Maybe I’m not so weird for enjoying it. So, you should take a look at it sometime, if you haven’t seen it. It’s really impressive how he can tame some really vicious sorts of dogs. I’m not sure how well the real owners of the dogs maintain their control afterwards, but it’s sweet to watch how he does it.

Last weekend, I won an eBay auction for an Xbox controller. I won and paid for the item on Sunday night, the order was processed on Monday. I received a confirmation email with tracking information on Monday evening… I still haven’t received the package yet (it’s going to be a week tomorrow). I’m fairly certain it will arrive on Monday, but it still seems like this is the longest shipping time I’ve had to deal with in awhile for any products I’ve purchased online. It was shipped with UPS Mail Innovations which claims it should be faster than typical USPS shipping, but it hasn’t been. I think this might be because it’s after Thanksgiving weekend, so I’m sure UPS and all the other major shipping companies are bogged down, but it’s still somewhat disappointing. I hope it was cheaper and easier for the seller to ship it this way, because otherwise this is a very inefficient way to ship things… a Bose home theater for example.
I just bought some sushi while I was at Kroger. It was decent. Uninteresting, but edible and somewhat enjoyable. I realize how important quality ingredients are with sushi, though, when I have stuff like that. It came with a little packet of soy sauce that wasn’t very good–watery and lacking flavor. I used some Kroger soy sauce that I had in the fridge, but I realized that’s also pretty bleh compared to Kikkoman and other premium soys. I’m not usually a snob about food, but I think sushi is something that isn’t really a product, but a combination of ingredients. Basically, you can, and should be able to, taste every ingredient in each bite. You should be able to taste the rice, the meat/vegetables, the soy and the wasabi. nothing should be too overpowering, and nothing should be lacking flavor entirely.

Mostly, this is a blog that I’m getting paid for, but for some reason I really do like WaMu (formerly Washington Mutual, I think… right?) It’s supposed to be an opinion about WaMu checking accounts, but I think that it’s fair to say that I value the company and I don’t have a checking account with them. I could start one, apparently for as low as $1, so maybe I will. I don’t have any problems with Chase, I guess. I mean, I can’t really get shitty because I made an irresponsible decision or two and there were some overdrafts. But, Chase isn’t so bad, I guess. I can access my account online, my direct deposit is set up to deposit into that account, the customer service reps have been nice enough, but if I was in the market, I’d give WaMu a shot. I’d still like to find a checking account that has a decent interest rate, if any. So, although I can’t give a truly valid opinion of WaMu’s checking account, the way they handle my credit card is respectable, so I’m not gonna complain and I’d give them a thumbs up.
