Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion

Filed under: music, media — Russ @ 6:27 pm

This album is awesome. I definitely recommend checking it out.

Reminds me of: The Scissor Sisters, Elton John, Queen, Billy Joel, James Blunt.

Why it’s good: Makes me smile and want to dance around. Clever lyrics. Excellent pianowork. Upbeat music.

Why it’s bad: It’s quasi-homo-ness makes it a guilty pleasure as I dance around my room singing, “Big girl, you are beautiful.”

You May Have Heard: “Grace Kelly,” “Love Today.”

Standout Tracks: “Happy Ending,” “Ring Ring,” “Stuck in the Middle.”

Overall impression: Would welcome it playing at any bar, club, party, or road trip. A very welcome change from my typical musical selections. Makes me smile.

Don’t Store Coffee In The Freezer!?

Filed under: ads, food, lifehack, vita — Russ @ 8:02 pm

Apparently, storing coffee in the freezer or the fridge really doesn’t help as much as most people think. Worse yet is storing coffee in the refrigeration. INeedCoffee.com has more information about storing coffee. They recommend storing it at room temperature while keeping a few other things in mind. I just thought that it was interesting and have had the draft with the link in waiting for awhile, so I wanted to get this info out there. This could be helpful information to give if you’re looking to give a delicious brew of coffee as catholic gifts.

Taxation without representation

Filed under: ads, politik, twerk, vita — Russ @ 7:55 pm

This post is about a week late, but I just wanted to express my slight anger about having to give money to the city of Ashland and not receiving any money back from the city of Ontario. For those of you who don’t know, last year I worked at the Sprint store in Ontario while living in Ashland with my parents, then Dave, before moving down here in September. Well, Ontario city income taxes were taken out of my paychecks. Not a big deal, if I lived in Ontario and filed a return with them. But, I lived in Ashland, so they were looking for the income tax that they deserve because I vote in Ashland. Ontario didn’t give me my money back, even though I have no voice in their elections, nor did they give it to Ashland. This whole taxation without representation issue is discussed further in
this article
. Apparently, Ohio is one of only 13 states in which this remains an issue. I’m not sure I have a better solution because I understand that the cities need the money to function, and without the money, the cities might have issues and not be able to retain businesses resulting in a loss of the same job. So, I’d rather pay $150 at the end of the year and keep my $30K or whatever/year job. It’s really just bitching, but I’d still like to be able to keep the money I work for–maybe cutback some groups that are non-emergency. Who needs a grandfather clock anyway?

Stuck at home this summer

Filed under: drinking, ads, vita — Russ @ 7:43 pm

Due to some recent events, I’m going to be spending a fair amount of time at home over the summer. This will give me plenty of time to work on random hobbies and I’m trying to figure out how to make it up to Ashland for at least a couple/few weekends each month to work on the Cavalier so I can learn some more about cars and such. It’ll also give me some time to develop my webby skills. I just want to get a new laptop so I can do that outside. We’ll see how that goes.
Guess I won’t be taking that Orlando vacation I had hoped for…

Visitors are certainly welcome. If you don’t know the address, just ask.

Summer brings the people out

Filed under: ads, politik, vita — Russ @ 7:35 pm

It’s been so nice the past week. It really bites that I’ve had a damned cold the whole time. But, that’s clearing up, so I’m going to be able to better enjoy the weather. Unfortunately, that also means that more people are out and about in our neighborhood, including the unsavories. For the most part, our area’s pretty tame, but on our ways to and fro and given destination, we have to navigate around weird people jaywalking or just stopping cars in the middle of the street. A lot more beggars tend to chill on street corners, too. Apparently, they didn’t need the money as badly when it was cold? I wonder how much the crime rate goes up during the summer. I also wonder how much money we’ll save by not using gas to heat the house, maybe we’ll have to open the windows. Time to invest in some new blinds, maybe.

Taste: The flavor is akin to Tang. Well, if you had sugar free Tang. I can taste the artificial sweetener ever-so-slightly, but it’s there.

Can: Pretty standard. Colors vary based on flavor.

Ingredients: Everything that normal energy drinks have. Amounts of energy-givers are listed, which I appreciate. 0 Calories and 0 Carbs.

Tis the season for gin

Filed under: drinking, food, vita — Russ @ 4:07 pm

A recent quote from a Slashfood article about Bulldog gin.

“Realizing that gin tastes like Christmas trees is what made me fall in love with the stuff.

Realizing that gin always gives me headaches while drinking it is what turned me to scotch, however.” - Gobo

If you didn’t know, gin and tonic is my favorite drink. I picked up a bottle of the new Tanqueray Rangpur this weekend in Indy because it was too cheap to pass up (about $10 or so less than here in Ohio). I’m optimistic about the taste.

Everybody’s got their quirks…

Filed under: twerk, vita — Russ @ 9:37 am

While eating lunch yesterday, we started discussing quirks that people have. We got on the story because one of the women I work with has a husband who refuses to eat blue M&Ms. He claims that it’s principle because blue was not one of the original colors, so it’s not a real M&M. After laughing heartily, she also told us that he refuses to order at drive-thrus. He’ll either make his wife yell across him from the passenger seat or make her drive. Lastly, he won’t push the shopping cart at the grocery store. She couldn’t give us a good reason for the last two, maybe because she’s never asked, but it got us all wondering… What quirks do you have?
Another fellow, Aaron, and I thought about it the entire time but could not come up with anything that was really “weird.” Most of the habits, routines, etc. that we have are because they either make our lives directly easier or they affect something else into being easier. For example, shampoo-face wash-body wash-rinse. That’s the process I use when showering. It is the quickest and allows the shampoo to stay in my hair as recommended by the bottle. Some semi-OCD habits I have about organization keep things in relatively particular places so that I know where to go when I need something and it prevents me from wasting lots of time searching.
After discussing these things, I was determined to find something that I do that is really odd and that few other people do–making me the weird one. But, I still can’t think of anything. Does anyone know of anything I do that is really odd? Or, what are some of your entirely strange quirks?
