Progressive Insurance Is Great

Filed under: ads, vita — Russ @ 8:40 pm

It’s been a few days since my accident and I just wanted to say that Progressive has done an excellent job at responding quickly and thoroughly to help me take care of everything that I’ve needed. Unfortunately, neither the claims agent nor I have been able to find my truck, but they’re trying and making it a pretty painless process so far. I’m definitely looking forward to having it all taken care of, but I think it’ll continue to be a pleasant experience. I wonder if this is how all other insurance companies are(?) Oh, and here are two more pictures of my arm. I look stoned in the one and the other one isn’t as well-defined as I’d like, but it’s still OK. I wish I could have taken some before the wounds were all sewn up. It looked fuggin’ sweet!

Merely a flesh wound

smilecuts640×480.jpgHere’s the first picture I’m putting up of the damage I wreaked on myself this past weekend. If you don’t know yet, I was kind of in a crazy little accident during the torrential downpour that ran through Columbus on Saturday. The picture is of my left forearm with 40 stitches in several different locations. It’s not really painful, nor was it before. It’s kind of annoying, but the stitches come out early next week. I’ll work on a good write-up of the entire incident and stuff after I can find my suvee and get some pictures of it.

Weight Loss

Filed under: ads, politik, food, lifehack, vita — Russ @ 7:31 pm

I need to write a post with a link to a weight loss thing, so I thought I would just write a post about weight loss. If you don’t know yet, eating healthy and exercising regularly is and always will be the best option for losing weight. Besides, you’ll feel better and look healthier if you take this route. I’m a fan of shortcuts, but I think the benefits of actually having some will power and dedication to some sort of plan/regimen outweigh the benefits of the shortcut. So, check out hoodia(sponsor) if you’re looking for a little helper/shortcut, but put on some sneakers and go run if you really want to help your body out.
I’ll get off the soapbox in a second…

P.S. Yes, I’m glad I have my metabolism.

Dime Collection

Filed under: ads, twerk, lifehack, vita, webby — Russ @ 10:15 pm

People talk about “every last dime” when they’re referring to saving and spending. And, although that has nothing to do with the original idea, I think about it every time I discuss this new dime collection I’m starting. It’s not entirely my idea. Ali and I were kind of joking about it for some reason. I think she made a comment about saving a million dimes, and I commented that I wasn’t so greedy and a half million would be plenty to serve a cause.
Anyhow, on to the point, I’m trying to collect a half of a million dimes. 500,000.
It’s not for some noble cause, but it’s also not just so I can buy gold bracelets. Every last dime I get is going to go straight towards my debt (mostly student loans). With any extra that I accrue, I will find a worthy charity or scholarship fund and donate it (How will there be extra? I’m already under 50K in debt, so there will be extra).
If you’d like to donate, I do have a Paypal account, but you have to say that it’s X number of dimes because Paypal doesn’t really handle dime increments very well, I don’t think. Or, I can give you my address if you’d like to mail me dimes. Rolls, individual, whatever. Everytime I fill my Columbus Clippers cup with dimes, I will take it to the bank and deposit it. Afterwards, I will make a payment on the debt and document that payment.
If I receive enough support, I will put a dime status tracker on here for everyone to follow me.
Now, please help, can you spare a dime?

A Scanner Darkly Review

Filed under: ads, media, vita — Russ @ 11:37 pm

I had heard some people say that they didn’t really like A Scanner Darkly. I don’t recall why they didn’t particularly like it. But, that’s not relevant. I really wanted to check it out because of the interesting animation style. If you never saw it, or the previews, it is like those Charles Schwab investment commercials with the semi-normal cartoonish looking people. It’s called interpolated rotoscoping.
Anyhow, the movie was good. It’s a very weird trip through one man’s depiction of how drugs fucked up the lives of him and his friends. Watching it made me feel like I should be on something to appreciate it to its fullest, but ended with me thinking about the lengths people go for themselves and for drugs.
It’s going in the collection somewhere between Akira and Requiem for a Dream.

ColdFusion Certification

Filed under: ads, twerk, projects, webby — Russ @ 8:51 pm

Last weekend, I read through about half of Ben Forta’s ColdFusion MX7 Study Guide with the intent of someday (hopefully by the end of the year) being certified in ColdFusion. Unfortunately, reading a study guide is not as helpful in learning as it is when being used as a refresher. Then again, most books that I’ve found aren’t as helpful in teaching you the first time around without actually going through some of the real-life examples they feature or just learning through trial and error. I’ve got plenty to learn, but I’m picking it up slowly. I think I’m going to try to convert my site into a ColdFusion site sometime soon–or at least start working on a little bit of a development program. At what point does coding become all I do with my waking hours?

I want to be to ColdFusion what Air Jordan is to basketball.

Memories of the rain

Filed under: ads, vita — Russ @ 8:24 pm

Judd and I were waiting to pull out of the parking lot at Chipotle tonight. As we sat there, he mentioned that he liked the rain. It got to the point where I recounted a summer past that was spent at Food Town as a bagboy with Noah and some of the other kids. I remember how it was either extremely busy or extremely dead when it rained, there was rarely a middle ground. But, on those warm summer nights, it wasn’t so bad to have a downpour. Throwing on an over-sized Food Town slicker, looking like the Gorton’s Fisherman, and pushing carts from the corrals back inside while the rain drenched me then coming back inside, soaked but grinning.

Late autumn rain sucked.

Birthday Gift

Filed under: ads, vita — Russ @ 8:08 pm

sneakers.jpgFriday, I cut out of work early to get to the post office and start getting stuff ready for the party that would ensue later that night. At the post office, a box was waiting for me that I needed to sign. The contents: a beautiful new pair of Nike Dunks! Orange interior, two-tone gray leather wrap the sides, and a white Nike logo with matching laces combine to create a wonderful set of tennies.

sneaker_pigeon.jpgMy favorite aspect of the shoes is the wonderful little pigeon featured near the heel of the shoe. You can see it pictured to the left. Sorry the quality is somewhat lacking as I can’t find my digi-cam and had to use my celly to capture it.

Anyhow, check out Retro23Fans if you are in the market for a pair of Air Jordans. It’s a good site with a pretty decent selection of the different series.

The Bourne Ultimatum - Quick & Dirty

Filed under: ads, media — Russ @ 9:10 pm

Kevin and I checked out The Bourne Ultimatum on Friday night. The previews for this movie give a pretty accurate description of what you can expect. In discussions with Pete today at work, we agreed that the two previous movies have a little more depth, but this one is also good. The non-stop action is fantastic, well-shot, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I really can’t fault it for its character development or a lack of plot. Both are good. My only complaint is that I’m just not a big fan of Julia Stiles. So, if you liked the first two or you are just a fan of action movies, you will enjoy this one. I would recommend watching both of the first two before seeing this one, as it does reference both previous movies (with flashbacks, of course, just as reminders).
